Frequently Asked Questions
Can anyone join?
Yes! The core group of cars (one representing each state, one representing the US Route 66 Centennial Commission, and one representing the international community) will be traveling all the way from Santa Monica, California to Chicago, Illinois. Others can join or leave at any time!
How do I join the caravan?
Our Schedule page outlines our start/end points for each day and other stops along the way. You can also follow along using our GPS tracker, which will be activated on the website during the journey.Â
Is there a registration fee?
Joining the caravan is totally free! We want as many people as possible to feel welcome being a part of this momentous occasion.
How long can I join for?
As long as you like! We are not covering any costs for any participants, so that's up to you.
Who is the organizer of the Caravan?
This caravan is coordinated through the Route 66 Road Ahead Partnership and their State Advocacy Working Group. Other official participants include the National Trust for Historic Preservation and the Big Texan Steak Ranch.
Is this the only caravan happening during the Centennial?
There are several other caravans being organized with various levels of participation from the public. You can see some of them on the national Route 66 Centennial website here.
Where is this caravan stopping?
The focus of this caravan, aside from giving each community a moment that is uniquely theirs, is Preservation. Stops have been selected along the way that highlight preservation success stories and that highlight the ongoing need for preservation support. If your community isn't an official stop, we'd still love to see you wave as we come through!
Will there be a way to show I am participating in this caravan, like a sticker or a magnet?
Yes! There is an online store here.
Will I be able to eat and sleep in the same place as the core caravan participants?
In most cases, yes. Check out the Accommodations page for Best Western locations. For meals, we want to have a positive economic impact in Route 66 communities as we travel. That means sharing the love! As you make friends on the journey, feel free to stop at places you want to experience.
